Joysticks (and controllers with analog sticks) handle a lot more as you would expect. The cursor to move the ship is a mouse only thing. On the Xbox 360 controller we use almost every button three times (with variations, such as holding down multiple buttons, long press, double taps, etc) You will probably need to use a keyboard and controller combination for any other controller that doesn't have a lot of buttons (like a joystick). Eterium is designed to not require the keyboard when using an Xbox 360 controller because we wrote custom code to support it. I highly recommend using an Xbox 360 controller to play Eterium (if you don't want to play with a joystick). To answer your question about controllers. We are discussing the possibility of offering an alternative mouse control that is closer to an FPS. Being the dev, I personally like the mouse controls but they have a very steep learning curve.
